If there’s one thing I have learned as an Interior Designer, it’s that growth doesn’t stop when you get the certificate or land your first client. In fact, that’s when it truly begins.
As a Nigerian interior designer navigating a constantly changing industry, 5 years in this industry and I’ve come to realize that continuous learning is not just a nice-to-have—it’s a survival tool, a success strategy, and honestly, a deep source of joy.
Design Is Always Evolving: So Must I
The world is moving fast. Trends come and go, new materials hit the market, and client needs are shifting rapidly. Sometimes it feels like the second you master one thing, another innovation is knocking at the door. But instead of letting that overwhelm me, I’ve learned to see it as an invitation: an invitation to stay curious and keep growing.
For me, continuous learning looks like signing up for that online course, following global designers for fresh inspiration, attending local design expos, and also having meaningful conversations with other creatives in the field. Every single one of these moments adds something valuable to my toolbox.
Design Biz Masterclass : The Masterclass That Shifted Everything
Every so often, you walk into a room and leave as a different person.
I recently attended the Design Biz Masterclass with @designbizcoach, Dr. Jeniffer Chukwujekwe, the President of @afcidafrica and former President of Interior Designers Association of Nigeria, .
I went in expecting to pick up a few practical business tips. What I got instead was a complete mindset shift, one that I didn’t even know I needed.
From the very first session, I was reminded that interior design is not just about aesthetics; it’s a business that demands structure, vision, and clarity. The masterclass peeled back the curtain on what it really takes to build a sustainable, profitable, and purpose-driven design brand, especially in the Nigerian market, where navigating challenges often requires double the creativity and triple the grit.
What struck me most wasn’t just the knowledge shared (which was priceless), but the intentionality of the facilitators. (Dr. Jennifer and Folakemi Oloye of Teal Harmony). They didn’t hold back. Every session was filled with real-life experiences, tried-and-tested systems, and genuine wisdom from years in the field.
I left feeling clearer, more confident, and more committed to showing up as a businesswoman, not just a designer. For the first time in a while, I saw my journey not as a hustle, but as a legacy in the making.
My Key Takeaways:
-
Systems give you freedom. Without structure, your creativity suffers.
-
Pricing isn’t just about figures, it’s about value perception.
- Your brand is bigger than your Instagram feed. Build with purpose and consistency.
- Don’t chase trends. Build your own signature.
- You can be creative and profitable—you don’t have to choose one over the other.
I’m beyond grateful to have been in that room. It was a divine appointment, and I left with fresh fire to take my design business to the next level with intention and grace.
If you’re a Nigerian designer feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next steps, I strongly recommend investing in rooms like this. Sometimes, your breakthrough is one masterclass away.
